This Independence Day carries special significance as the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and California celebrates 175 years of statehood. These milestones provide an opportunity to reflect on our shared history, recognize the contributions of those who came before us, and look ahead to the future we continue to build together.

Here in Walnut Creek, we are fortunate to celebrate these anniversaries in ways that reflect the values and character of our community. Whether gathering with family and friends, enjoying our parks and trails, or participating in local traditions, residents have many opportunities to connect with one another and appreciate the community we share.

One of Walnut Creek's cherished Independence Day traditions is the annual Walnut Creek Concert Band performance in Civic Park. This free concert brings residents together to enjoy music and community spirit in the heart of our city. We invite families, friends, and neighbors to bring a blanket or lawn chair and join us for this longstanding celebration.

The commemoration of America's 250th anniversary will continue on July 7, when Walnut Creek serves as a stop along the American Discovery 250 Relay, a nationwide event traveling the American Discovery Trail. Participants will begin their day in Walnut Creek before traversing Mount Diablo and other notable open spaces in Contra Costa County, highlighting the landscapes that have helped shape our region and continue to enrich our quality of life.

As we mark these historic milestones, we encourage residents to celebrate safely, enjoy time with loved ones, and take pride in the community we share. Together, we honor our past while continuing to build a vibrant future for generations to come.
