What is the Civic Academy?

Formerly known as the Citizens Institute, Walnut Creek Civic Academy consists of five evening sessions and one Saturday morning session in which participants:

Learn first-hand how the City works
Meet and get to know their neighbors, City officials, and City employees
Gain an improved awareness of available City services and community resources, and
Discover opportunities to be involved with their local government

Sessions generally run from 6:00 p.m. until approximately 8:30 p.m. and are held at City Hall, or in other City facilities where behind the scenes tours take place. Participants must be able to commit to all of the following session dates:

Who can participate?

Anyone who lives, works, volunteers, or owns a business in Walnut Creek (including unincorporated Walnut Creek) and has an interest in local government is invited to sign up for the Civic Academy.

There is no fee to attend, but applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the first session date and can commit to attending all of the scheduled sessions.

Space is limited by design! Classes are designed for 25-30 students to encourage discussion, involvement, and interaction.

Understanding the Big Picture - Meet the City Manager and the Mayor
Evolution of a City - The Role of Community & Economic Development
Walnut Creek Police Department - Get to know the WCPD
Keeping Things Running Smoothly - Tour the Public Works Corp Yard and learn about the wide array of Public Works functions, from managing parks to repairing streets.
Enhancing the Quality of Life in Walnut Creek - Get a behind the scenes tour of the Lesher Center and learn about the diverse recreational opportunities in Walnut Creek.
Neighborhood Showcase/Bus Tour - Share your knowledge and “tour-guide” skills while describing the highlights of your neighborhood. Learn about all the diverse neighborhoods and landmarks in Walnut Creek.

During our last session, we'll close with a graduation, and a chance for conversation with your fellow participants.
