Building codes are regularly updated. The permit application date determines the set of codes that apply to your project.

2025 California Building Codes Went Into Effect January 1, 2026

The California Building Standards Commission updates the Building Standards Code (California Code of Regulation, CCR, Title 24) every three years. The 2025 Codes were published on July 1, 2025 and became applicable to all building permit applications made on or after January 1, 2026.

Applications received on or after January 1, 2026

Applications received on or after January 1, 2026 must meet the following set of building codes:

• 2025 California Building Code (Based on the International Building Code, 2024 Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Residential Code (Based on the International Residential Code, 2024 Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Plumbing Code (Based on Uniform Plumbing Code, 2024 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Mechanical Code (Based on the Uniform Mechanical Code, 2024 IAPMO Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Electrical Code (Based on the National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Referenced Standards Code
• 2025 California Energy Code
• 2025 California Green Building Standards Code
• 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code (Based on the International Wildland-Urban Interface Code, 2024 Edition with State amendments)
• 2025 California Fire Code (Based on the International Fire Code, 2024 Edition with State amendments)
• City of Walnut Creek Municipal Code

After-Hours Permit

An after-hours permit is required for construction on Saturdays and City Holidays (2026: 1/01, 1/19, 2/16, 5/25, 9/07, 11/11, 11/27, 12/24, 12/31). No construction is allowed on National holidays, such as Independence Day (7/3), Thanksgiving (11/26), Christmas (12/25), and New Years (1/01).
